What's Actually in Your Candle? How to Read the Label No One Prints

There is no regulatory requirement in the United States for candle companies to disclose what their candles are made from. Not the wax. Not the fragrance. Not the dye. Here is how to read the label no one prints — and what to ask before you buy anything you plan to burn in your home.

Here is something the candle industry does not advertise: there is no regulatory requirement in the United States for candle companies to disclose what their products are made from.

Not the wax. Not the fragrance compounds. Not the dye. Not the wick material. None of it.

"Natural," "clean," "non-toxic," and "eco-friendly" have no legal definition in candle marketing. A manufacturer can print any of those words on any candle — regardless of what is inside it — without regulatory consequence. The ingredient list, when one appears at all, is entirely voluntary. And the words that do appear on it are not required to mean what they sound like they mean.

Most candle shopping happens in this information gap. This post is about how to close it.


The Wax: What Isn't Said Is Usually the Point

The wax is the bulk of a candle — typically 80–90% of its weight. It is the primary source of what burns, what produces combustion byproducts, and what determines the fundamental quality of the burn. It is also the ingredient most obscured by marketing language.

"Soy wax" could mean 100% soy wax. It could also mean a soy-paraffin blend where soy is simply the majority component. There is no disclosure requirement for blend ratios. A candle that contains 51% soy and 49% paraffin can be labeled a "soy candle" without technically misrepresenting itself.

"Natural wax" means essentially nothing. Paraffin is technically derived from a natural substance — petroleum occurs naturally. "Natural wax" tells you almost nothing about the specific wax, its origin, or how it was processed.

"Plant-based wax" typically means soy or coconut wax. This is more specific than "natural wax," but still does not tell you whether it is 100% that wax or a blend, how it was processed, or whether it contains additives.

"Beeswax" or "100% beeswax" is one of the more specific claims available — though "beeswax" alone does not rule out a blend, while "100% beeswax" does. The distinction matters.

What to look for: A specific wax type, stated as 100% of that wax, from a brand willing to explain their sourcing. Any wax description that doesn't specify 100% should prompt a follow-up question to the brand.

The Fragrance: The Single Most Important Word on the Label

"Fragrance" is the most consequential word in candle marketing — and the one that reveals the least.

Under US law, fragrance formulations are considered trade secrets. The specific compounds in a fragrance blend do not have to be disclosed to consumers. A candle ingredient list that reads simply "fragrance" is legally covering a blend of potentially hundreds of undisclosed chemical compounds. Some of those compounds are completely benign. Others include phthalates (associated with endocrine disruption), certain aldehydes, synthetic musks, and other compounds with varying safety profiles and varying research behind them.

This is not a minor loophole. It is the primary way that candles marketed as "clean" or "natural" can contain ingredients that most informed consumers would not voluntarily choose to burn in their homes.

The key distinctions between fragrance types:

"Fragrance" (unspecified): The trade-secret designation. Could be anything. Zero transparency. This is the term to treat with most caution.

"Natural fragrance": An entirely unregulated marketing term. There is no legal definition. It can mean a fragrance derived from natural sources, a blend of natural and synthetic components, or something that bears little relationship to what "natural" implies. Do not assume "natural fragrance" means essential oil.

"Essential oil" (named specifically): "Lavender essential oil," "eucalyptus essential oil," "a blend of lemon, grapefruit, and rosemary essential oils" — a named plant-derived oil or blend is a more specific and verifiable claim. It tells you the plant of origin and excludes synthetic compounds. Look for brands that also third-party test their essential oils, since lavender and other popular oils are frequently adulterated with cheaper alternatives.

"Phthalate-free fragrance oil" (specified): A synthetic fragrance compound that has been manufactured without phthalates — and ideally without carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxins, and organ toxins. This is a meaningful and specific claim. It is more honest than "natural fragrance," which frequently implies something it is not. A phthalate-free fragrance oil from a transparent brand with documented standards is a genuinely different product from conventional synthetic fragrance.

The Wick: Smaller Detail, Real Consequence

Lead-core wicks were banned by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission in 2003, but metal-core wicks — typically zinc or tin — still exist in some candles and can release metal particulates when burned. Cotton wicks are the standard in responsible candle making.

Beyond the material, wick sizing matters. A wick that is too large for its vessel creates a flame that runs too hot, burns the wax too quickly, produces more soot, and can make the jar dangerously warm. A properly sized cotton wick, maintained at ¼ inch before each burn, produces a steady and clean flame.

What to look for: "Lead-free cotton wick" stated explicitly on the product page or label. If wick material is absent from any description, it is worth asking.

Dyes and Colorants: Why Amber Is the Right Color

Those vivid, perfectly uniform candle colors — the deep burgundy, the perfect sage green, the consistent pale pink — are produced with dyes. Candle dyes are synthetic colorants added purely for visual effect; they have no functional role in the burn. Some synthetic dyes release compounds when burned that have no business being in household air.

The natural color of raw beeswax is a warm, slightly variable amber. The variation is because it is a natural material — the specific flora the bees foraged, the region, the season, all influence the exact shade. If a beeswax candle is perfectly and consistently colored, it has almost certainly been dyed.

Our candles contain no dyes or colorants. The amber you see is the wax. The variation between batches is the wax being real.


Stabilizers, UV Inhibitors, and Other Additives

Beyond the four main categories above, candles frequently contain additional processing aids:

Stabilizers prevent the wax from developing a rough surface texture or discoloration during storage. In raw beeswax, the natural behavior of the wax — including the occasional white bloom on its surface — is considered a defect to be corrected in mass-market candles. UV inhibitors prevent wax from yellowing in light. They are a cosmetic additive with no benefit to the burn.

Hardeners adjust the melting point of softer waxes like soy to improve their performance. Beeswax does not require hardeners — its naturally high melting point produces a firm candle without additives.

The Four Questions to Ask Before You Buy Any Candle

Reading a candle label is not difficult once you know what to look for. Before buying any candle — including ours — these four questions give you the information you actually need:

1. What is the wax, specifically? "100% [named wax]" is a meaningful answer. "Natural waxes" or "plant-based blend" is not.

2. What is the fragrance source? Named essential oils or a specified phthalate-free fragrance oil with documented standards are meaningful answers. "Fragrance" or "natural fragrance" unspecified is not.

3. What is the wick made from? "Lead-free cotton" is the answer. Absent any wick disclosure, ask.

4. Does the brand disclose everything, specifically? A brand that can answer the first three questions clearly and completely — without marketing language, without vague claims — is demonstrating the standard. A brand that cannot is not.

A candle made with 100% raw beeswax, pure essential oils or a rigorously vetted phthalate-free fragrance oil, a lead-free cotton wick, and no dyes, stabilizers, or additional additives — from a brand that fully discloses every ingredient. Do I need to worry about candle ingredients if I only burn occasionally?

The risk from occasional use in ventilated spaces is low. The concern grows with frequency — burning candles nightly in a small bedroom, or regularly in spaces with limited air exchange, increases cumulative exposure. The risk-benefit calculation is different for households with infants, pregnant women, or people with respiratory sensitivities, where a higher standard is warranted regardless of frequency.

How can I verify what a candle brand claims?

Ask for third-party testing documentation for essential oils. Ask for the Safety Data Sheet for fragrance oils. Ask whether the wax is 100% of the stated type or a blend. A brand with genuine transparency will answer these questions directly and specifically. A brand that deflects or responds with marketing language is telling you something in the process of not telling you what you asked.
